Judy Hung’s Music: Artistic Excellence and Vision at OSJVS

Bringing Musical Heritage to Life at OSJVS

Essence Classique: The expressive beauty of the classical music

Judy’s newest musical adventure, the album Essence Classique (2025), is like a time machine for the ears. It captures the transition from the elegant late Baroque to the powerful Classical era. Through Judy Hung Music, she has curated a collection of pieces that don't just sound "old"—they sound alive, clear, and full of emotion. It’s a project that celebrates the beauty of simplicity and the incredible expressive range of the instruments of that time.

At the core of our orchestra's spirit is the creative energy of Dr. Judy Hung. For Judy, music isn't just about following a score; it’s about a deep, personal connection to the instruments and the stories they tell. As our Artistic Director, Judy brings this vibrant musicality to every rehearsal, but her personal projects under the Judy Hung Music are where she truly dives into the "soul" of the classical era. We are so excited to share how her latest musical discoveries are shaping the way we hear and play music here at OSJVS.

Exploring Historical Performance and Period Instruments

The magic of Judy Hung’s music often lies in the rare instruments Judy plays. In this project, she moves gracefully between:

  • The 1806 Clavichord: A whisper-quiet, sensitive instrument that requires the gentlest touch.

  • The 1795 Rosenberger Fortepiano: The ancestor of the modern piano, offering a crisp, bright sound that Haydn and Mozart would have recognized instantly.

  • The Violoncello da spalla: A fascinating cello played on the shoulder, giving a unique texture to the strings.

The music on this album takes us on a wonderful path. You'll hear the dramatic flair of C.P.E. Bach, the playful wit of Haydn, and the familiar, moody beauty of Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata. Judy also shares the music of Josepha Auernhammer, a brilliant woman composer of the time, making this a truly inclusive celebration of the Classical era's best sounds.

Bridging Professional Artistry and Youth Mentorship

The best part about Judy Hung Music is how it spills over into our orchestra. Judy’s personal dedication to mastering these historic styles is what makes her such an inspiring mentor for our young musicians.

Bringing Historical Authenticity to the Next Generation

When Judy talks to our students about phrasing or how a bow should feel on a string, she’s speaking from her own hands-on experience in the recording studio. She makes "history" feel like a living, breathing thing that our students can reach out and touch through their own instruments.
